  • Sam Taylor-Johnson talks Gypsy, Naomi Watts & terrifying friends on #HeyItsOK Podcast

"I have a friend that I'm frightened of"

    • 11 Jul 2017

On this week's Hey It's OK podcast, GLAMOUR's editor-in-chief Jo Elvin and social media editor Kat Brown are joined by filmmaking extraordinaire Sam Taylor-Johnson to discuss three all important questions - is it OK to cull friendships? Is it OK to have a friend that slightly terrifies you? And finally, can you be good at your job but still kind of hate it?

Before they get into it, Sam opens up about working with Naomi Watts on brand new Netflix show Gypsy: "She's fucking great. And the great thing for me was that she was game to do this," she reveals.

"She'd never done television really, or I don't think she's done anything significant in terms of a big meaty role like this, but she signed on immediately. Once I knew that I had her, I really knew that it was going to be something special because she just gives her heart and soul to everything.

    "She's really talented," she continues.

On the characteristics of the show's female protagonist, Jean Holloway, Sam, who directed the first two episodes, says:

"She lives this kind of immoral, mad, unpredictable life that she throws grenades into constantly and it's quite nice to create a woman anti-hero. I don't know how many of them we tend to see, they tend to be written for men."

"You're really not rooting for her," she adds. "You're rooting for everyone around her hoping she doesn't touch them."

On the topic of culling friendships, Jo and Sam get very candid...

"I think I'd probably do it without telling anyone that I'm doing it," says Jo.

"Yes, that's the best way. I did have a good friend - I won't name her - but she's a very well known artist and she wrote a list of people she wanted to cull, the reasons why and then wrote them each a letter saying 'you are no longer my friend and I don't want you in my life'" adds Sam.

    Ouch!

Still discussing friendships, the 50-year-old star, who is married to British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, admits that she has a friend that she is "frightened" of.

"[It's] because they constantly tell me [that] I'm doing everything wrong," she explains. "I think there's something in me that obviously needs it because we're still really good friends... She's a sounding board for knowing I'm right."

Moving onto to work life, Sam, Kat and Jo all agree that while they love their jobs - it's not all "glitter and unicorns" all the time.

"I was interviewed by a couple of university students the other day and they were saying 'oh it must be so brilliant to just get up everyday and just love your job' and it is, and I do love my job," says Jo. "But the way they were talking about it was like woodland creatures frolic behind me and I never have to go to a budget meeting or say something shitty to a staff member.

"So I'd say I do love my job and I try to be good at it but there are bits of it that I do f-ing hate. I hate talking to anybody about money, I hate balancing budgets, I don't want to think about deadlines," she adds.

Sam concludes with a sound bit of advise: "I think it's really great to be good at your job for everybody else but to hate it personally is the worst thing you could do for yourself."

    Gypsy is on Netflix now.
