  • Nadiya Hussian on why her own wedding made her hate weddings altogether

"Don't send me the invite because I don't want to go"

    • 25 Jul 2017

Great British Bake Off star Nadiya Hussain revealed exactly how she feels about weddings on this week's Hey It's OK podcast and let's just say, if you were planning on sending her an invite to your wedding - don't.

Discussing the topic with GLAMOUR's editor-in-chief Jo Elvin and deputy editor James Williams, the mother-of-three spoke candidly about how much she dislikes weddings and her own one has a lot to do with it.

"At first I used to make up loads of excuses [not to go to weddings]. I'd say 'oh I've got this going on or be like, 'I had a baby six years ago so I can't possibly come.' Lots of really feeble excuses," she says.

"Now, I just say nope. Don't send me the invite because I don't want to go and I just don't turn up."

However, she does make exception for close relatives: "I have one brother left to get married and one brother-in-law and they're the only weddings I will attend. I will never attend anything else."

While you might think Nadia's approach to wedding invites is a bit on the harsh side, she has her reasons.

"South Asian weddings tend to be really big," she explains. "My own wedding was something like 2,000 people and I didn't know any of them. The only people I knew were my parents, I didn't even know my husband that well.

"Its quite scary and I think that's what put me off. They're not fun because there's just too much happening."

Nadiya, whose new eight-part BBC series Nadiya's British Food Adventure kicked off last night, also hates the idea of being told what to do when attending other people's weddings.

"The bride and groom are the ones that control every aspect for the wedding," she added. "They'll be like 'well if you turn up at 4pm we will feed you at 7pm' and you just have to sit there and take it. I can't cope with that."
