  • Kathy Lette on why Bridget Jones isn't a feminist role model

The author described Bridget Jones as a "very bland doppelgänger" to Jane Austen's Elizabeth Bennet

    • 01 Aug 2017

Australian author and close pal of Nicole Kidman, Kathy Lette got candid about her unpopular opinion on Bridget Jones this week as she joined GLAMOUR's Jo Elvin and James Williams for the Hey It's OK Podcast.

After deciding that it was OK to look up to a fictitious character, Lette admitted that she admired Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice protagonist a lot more than Bridget Jones.

"What I love about Jane Austen and about Lizzie Bennet is that she refused to get married except for love," she explained. "You think of her very bland doppelgänger, Bridget Jones, who once her snooze alarm went off on her biological clock she no longer looked for Mr Right [to get married], you know this character Jane Austen created centuries ago is a much more of a radical feminist role model than Bridget Jones."

Discussing her new book titled Best Laid Plans , Lette also revealed that the story, which is based on a woman raising an autistic son who struggles with a love life and ends up taking him curb-crawling, was directly inspired by her own experiences with her son.

"Whenever you hear about someone disabled on TV they’re either to be inspirational or to be pitied. No one thinks about them having urges," she said. "The trouble with someone who’s on the autistic spectrum is that they’re incredibly eccentric. But to girls their own age, they seem to weird. They seem too exotic."

“They get very lonely. [My son] was exiled in virtual Siberia for his entire teenage years... {His] self-esteem got so low, it was lower than Kim Kardashian’s bikini line.

"I asked all my friends if they’d take him to a brothel and the answer came there – ‘no’. So I did find myself driving through the red light district one night thinking I would pick up a prostitute," she continued. "Then when the women came close to the car I thought, what do I say? I didn’t even have any vocabulary to deal with the situation. So I sort of spooked and went home."

Lette, who wrote her first novel at the impressive age of 17, then admitted that the experience became the basis of her book.

The 58-year-old writer also shared her thoughts on 'vanilla' sex and the fear of aging on this week's podcast.

Kathy Lette's book 'Best Laid Plans' is out now.
